The Church
We say "the church" as that is what most people say when they mean the main worship space. Of course, the Church is not a building, but a gathering of people centered around faith in Jesus Christ. There are other more specialized words that refer to the building in which the Church meets.
The nave is the main seating area of the worship space. The choir is the space between the nave and the altar or sanctuary and it is where the choir sits on Sunday and the people sit for smaller services such as the Wednesday morning service of Holy Communion which includes anointing for healing. There are two terms for the final area of the worship space - altar or sanctuary. This area is at the very front of the church and includes the altar, the tabernacle where the reserved Sacrament is kept, and the credence table where all the things necessary to celebrate Holy Communion are placed. This is also where the clergy and lay leaders who assist with Holy Communion sit during worship services.
The main worship space - the part of the building to the right in the exterior photos below up to the archways - was finished in 1919 and dedicated in 1920, but the church actually began a few years earlier in 1914 when it met in a house across the street.
