Cursillo at St. Mary's

The Cursillo movement originated in the Roman Catholic Church in Mallorca, Spain in the late 1940's. It found its way to the USA where the first three-day weekend was held in Waco, Texas in 1957. With the help of Roman Catholic sponsors, the Diocese of Iowa held the first official Episcopal three-day weekend in 1970. From there the movement spread throughout the country and found its way to Long Island in November of 1979. Since then many of St. Mary's parishioners have "made" their weekend. Quite a few have served on teams including several who have served as lay-leaders of teams.

A Cursillo weekend is a short course in Christianity but the Cursillo method is a way of life. Cursillistas meet weekly to share their Christian walks and to support each other. Monthly Ultreyas are held throughout the Diocese of Long Island where larger groups of Cursillistas similarly share their walks and support each other with prayer and praise.

The original goal of the first weekends was to foster involvement in the Church. This has not changed over nearly 60 years and goes hand in hand with the development of lay leadership. One of the first talks on a typical weekend discusses the role of the laity and how the Church cannot survive and flourish without active lay people.

Anyone interested in the Cursillo movement should contact Father Philip who can answer your questions or direct you to any of the numerous Cursillistas in our parish.
